Counting and quantatity are the bases of math but isn´t it sometimes not so encouraging for students?
Well at least it is something I face this year, my students math skills are really low. I mean they can count but that's about it. I know english is there second language but that shouldn't be an excuse... count from 1-10 only! Well it is what it is so to solve and be the best we can for this generation we have been taking baby steps in order to run later in the year (hopefully).
This is one of the activities we did in math and it worked great so I wanted to share with you. They counted and counted and counted and didn't get bored! For my students that needed some help counting they had a number grid.
Basically the steps are:
Roll the dice and count the dots to know your numbers
Count the spiders to match the number that was rolled
Fill the pumkin
Then it's the partner's turn (see they are racing)
The students that need a number grid place the spiders as they count on the number this way they see the number, helps them count and knows when to stop.
