In math class we are learning about one more-one less. I like to take advantage of the celebrations fever and excitment as a mootivation tool. This was just the introduction of a center so I won't lie it wasn´t easy but it was sure fun. The themem revolves around helping frankenstein gather spiders to decorate his house.
How does it work? Well:
1st. Place spider cards somewhere around the mat.
2nd. Student closes eyes and grabs a card.
3rd. Student places that card in the middle.
4th. Student must find the card that is 1 less then the card in the middle.
5th. Last student must the card that is 1 more then the card in the middle.
I recommend having a numberline visible for them to serve student as a scaffolding. The way I work things are that my math rotations are first worked as a group activity. This way they know what to do during math rotation. So don't worry because you only see one mat for three students, nexxt time they get one for each ;)
Remember to have fun while teaching and using celebrations can be a boost in your class and don't give up in your first attempt with something.
